Time to learn how to breathe. I know you already know how to breathe because your body does it for you...Big hug to your autonomic nervous system. In yoga we go a little deeper and learn how to be aware of our breath, and use our breath to assist our body to relax, go deeper into postures, and prepare for meditation. So today start in easy pose, and put one hand on your chest and the other hand on your belly. Begin take deep full inhales, and deep full exhales. Become aware of how your body moves when you breath. Where do you feel your breath in your body? Do you feel your belly/chest rise and fall as you inhale and exhale? Notice everything you can about how it feels to take a deep inhale and exhale. Notice how it feels when you fill your lungs with breath. Spend a little time here to explore how it feels to consciously breathe. You may notice you feel more alert and yet relaxed after this simple practice. Try to do this for about five minutes. If you start feeling stressed or burned out through out your day come back to this practice, and do a little conscious breathing to help you relax. Over the next 30 days we are going back to yoga basics. We will focus on simple foundational postures that are easy to do so that you are motivated to get on your mat. Today we start with easy pose, or sukasana. All you need to do is have a seat on your mat, and come into a crossed legged position. If easy pose doesn't feel that easy on your low back, hips, or knees sit on a bolster, block or pillow to help elevate your hips off the floor. You can also sit in a chair with your feet on the floor if sitting on the floor puts to much stress on your body. No matter where you find easy pose remember to sit up tall and relax your shoulders gently down your back. Take a big inhale and grow tall and as you exhale gently engage your lower belly lifting up the pelvic floor muscles, which is similar to doing kegel exercises, and checking the shoulders are relaxed. You can bring your hands into prayer, or on place your hands on your knees. Stay here for about ten rounds of breath. This is a great posture to begin your yoga practice, and also great for meditation. We are going to add on to this pose in coming days. If you have never done a yoga posture this is a great posture to get you started, and learn how to connect with your breath one inhale and one exhale at a time. Got a question??
